For many of us, taking a bath is as much about relaxation and self-care as it is about getting clean. And like other forms of relaxation, you want to make sure you’re getting the most out of your bath.

Things like essential oil diffusers or Epsom salts are a great way to make your bath time more restorative, but did you know that the temperature of your bath is a factor in how effective your bath is?

Yes, there is an ideal bath temperature. Read on to learn what it is and why your bath should be in a certain temperature range.

What is the Ideal Bath Temperature?

The ideal temperature for your bath is somewhere between 90° F and 105° F (32° C – 40° C), which is just above the average body temperature.

Luckily, you don’t need a thermometer to determine the ideal temperature of your bath water. Simply hold your wrist, not your hand, in the water. If it feels comfortable for you, you’re in the right temperature range.

Can a Bath Be Too Hot?

Although some might disagree, your bath actually can be too hot. You shouldn’t have to slowly work your way into the tub because the water is too hot (like slowly getting into a cold pool on a hot day).

In addition, you shouldn’t start sweating while you are soaking. Those are two sure signs that your bath is too warm. To fix this, simply run some cold water into the bathtub until it’s comfortable.

Even if a very hot bath is comfortable for you, it’s not a good idea. It turns out that soaking in extra hot water isn’t just a matter of comfort.

Are There Health Risks to Taking Hot Baths?

Believe it or not, taking baths that are too hot does have some negative side effects.

The biggest risk concerns your skin. Bathwater that is too hot depletes your skin’s natural oils, causing it to dry out faster than it normally would. This can exacerbate skin conditions like:

  • Eczema

  • Rosacea

  • Psoriasis

  • Sensitive skin

If you struggle with any of these conditions or find yourself slathering on extra lotion to treat dry skin, take extra care to make sure your bathwater isn’t too hot.

If you want to take care of your skin while enjoying a warm bath now and then, try applying lotion or body oil immediately after your bath to lock in moisture.

Another risk to be aware of is the fact that soaking in hot water can temporarily lower your blood pressure. For those that already have low blood pressure, this could cause it to dip too low. If your blood pressure is already on the low end, take extra care when getting out of a hot bath. Move slowly and sit down immediately if you start to feel lightheaded.
