What Is a Shower Enclosure?

A shower enclosure is the complete shower system, including the shower walls, base, doors, and design features that create your finished shower space. Unlike standard shower solutions, a custom shower enclosure allows you to choose elements that fit your bathroom layout and personal needs.

When designing a shower enclosure, homeowners should consider:

  • Bathroom size and layout

  • Shower entry options

  • Wall materials

  • Door style

  • Storage solutions

  • Shower fixtures

  • Comfort and safety features

Taking the time to plan each detail helps create a shower that works well today and continues to meet your needs over time.

Step 1: Choose a Shower Layout That Fits Your Space

Before selecting finishes and accessories, consider your available space, plumbing placement, and how you want to move throughout the room.

Common shower enclosure layouts include:

Corner Shower Enclosures

Corner layouts are a practical option for smaller bathrooms because they maximize available space while creating an efficient shower area.

Alcove Shower Enclosures

An alcove shower fits between three walls and offers a classic design that works well in many bathroom layouts.

Open or Standalone Shower Enclosures

For larger bathrooms, an open shower design can create a spacious, modern feel while allowing for additional customization options.

A professional shower designer can help determine which layout best supports your bathroom design goals and daily routine.

Step 2: Select Durable, Low-Maintenance Shower Wall Materials

Your shower walls play an important role in both the appearance and long-term performance of your shower enclosure. When comparing shower materials, consider durability, maintenance, and how well each option fits your desired style.

Traditional tile offers a wide range of design possibilities, but grout lines require regular maintenance to help prevent buildup over time.

KOHLER LuxStone shower walls offer the look of natural materials with a durable, nonporous surface designed for easy maintenance. Made from a blend of crushed stone, LuxStone provides a seamless, grout-free design that helps simplify cleaning while adding a refined look to your bathroom.

Step 3: Choose Shower Features That Improve Comfort and Convenience

A modern shower enclosure should be designed around the way you use your space every day. The right features can improve comfort while helping create a more functional shower experience.

Consider incorporating:

Low-Threshold Shower Entry

A low-threshold shower base creates a smoother transition into the shower and can make entering and exiting easier.

Shower Seating

Built-in or folding shower seats provide a convenient place to sit while bathing and can add comfort and flexibility.

Handheld Showerheads

A handheld showerhead offers added versatility and allows you to direct water where you need it most.

Adjustable Shower Fixtures

Thoughtfully placed shower controls and fixtures can make the shower easier and more comfortable to use.

With Reveal by KOHLER remodeling, you can customize your shower with features that support your preferences and style.

Step 4: Add Storage Solutions for a More Functional Shower

A clutter-free shower can make your daily routine feel more organized. Built-in storage options keep essentials within reach while maintaining a clean, modern appearance.

Popular shower storage options include:

  • Built-in shelving

  • Shower niches

  • Corner shelves

  • Floating shelves

When designing your shower enclosure, consider where storage will be most convenient based on your shower layout and daily habits.

Step 5: Select a Shower Door Style That Works for Your Space

Your shower door impacts both the appearance and functionality of your enclosure. The right option depends on your bathroom size, layout, and personal preferences.

Sliding Shower Doors

Sliding doors are a great option for smaller bathrooms because they do not require additional space to swing open.

Pivot or Hinged Shower Doors

These styles provide a classic look and can complement larger shower spaces with enough clearance.

Frameless Shower Doors

Frameless designs create a sleek, open appearance that works well with modern bathroom styles.

Your Reveal by KOHLER Authorized Dealer can help you choose a door style that complements your design while fitting your space.

Step 6: Create a Shower Designed for Today and Tomorrow

Many homeowners are choosing shower designs that provide greater comfort and flexibility for the future. A thoughtful shower remodel can include features that make the space easier to enjoy for everyone in your household.

Modern shower accessibility features may include:

  • Low-step shower entry

  • Shower seating

  • Grab bars

  • Easy-to-use fixtures

  • Convenient storage placement

  • Spacious shower layouts

These features can be incorporated into a beautiful, customized design that complements your bathroom style.
